Translation from German:
Nice here.
But have you ever been to Baden-Württemberg?
When you walk around the touristy sights all around the world, look around: you just might find this sticker there:

“Nett hier” sticker on a burned-out car in Namibia (2017). This image was originally posted to Flickr by Sonse.
The sticker was a part of a marketing campaign for the German state of Baden-Württemberg, which dated back to 1999. At that time, the sticker didn’t receive as much attention, partly because it was overshadowed by another slogan of the state “We can do everything. Except (speaking) High German. (Wir können alles. Außer Hochdeutsch.)” For context, Baden-Württemberg (among other regions) speaks a German dialect called Swabian, which is proudly showcased by the slogan.
For the next 20 years, people never really noticed the sticker’s existance, until Kylie Jenner’s BFF Anastasia Karanikolaou accidentally became the spokesperson for this sticker:
Since then, the sticker’s popularity exploded. Germans rushed to the state government’s website to get the stickers and then take them to every corner of the world.
Now, you can see the self-deprecating sticker all over the world, from Hawaii islands, near Mount Everest, to Machu Picchu in Peru.
Background information is from Spiegel Travel and Südkurier.
